Issue: After upgrading to Windows 98 from Windows for Workgroups, my modem no longer works. Looking at System Devices, there is a yellow exclamation mark next to the modem.
Reason: The driver was the Windows for Workgroups version.
Solution: Download the appropriate modem driver.

LifeBook 675Tx, 690Tx

Issue: 3D Spatializer is no longer available in AudioRack.
Reason: The default ESS audio driver for Windows 98 does not support this.
Solution: Reinstall the original ESS driver from either the Recovery CD or download it.

Issue: When installing a PCMCIA modem, the modem does not function.
Reason: The serial port settings are trying to use the address space reserved for the internal modem.
Solution: Reserve the address space by doing the following.

  1. Double Click on My Computer
  2. Click Properties
  3. Click the Device Manager Tab.
  4. Double click on Computer and the click on the Reserve Resources Tab.
  5. Click on I/O
  6. Click Add
  7. Enter 2F8 as the start value.
  8. Enter 2FF as the end value.
  9. Click OK to accept the changes
  10. Click OK to complete the fix.

LifeBook 690Tx

Issue: While upgrading to Windows 98, installation asks for the video driver.
Reason: Our video driver is newer than Microsoft's.
Solution: Copy the video driver from the Recovery CD or download it and choose it as the Display adapter.

Issue: When you hot-undock the system (i.e., remove the unit from it's dock while the power is on), and then continue to use the system, un-docked, and then hot-dock (return it to the dock with the power on), the CD-ROM drive is not recognized by Windows.
Reason: After upgrading to Windows 98, the operating system enables the 'Secondary IDE Controller.' Consequently, your original configuration is lost. .
Solution: In order to properly build an undocked configuration for the 690Tx, you have to disable the 'Secondary IDE Controller' in undocked mode.

Enable the 'Secondary IDE Controller' by following these steps:

  1. Hot-undock the unit (you have to make sure you have created the undocked profile after upgrading to Windows 98) or turn off the system, remove the unit from the dock and boot in undocked mode.
  2. Open the 'Control Panel' folder, 'System', open the 'Device Manager' tab, expand the 'Hard disk controllers' section, select the 'Secondary IDE controller...' option, and un-check the 'Exists in all hardware profile' box in the 'Device usage' section.
  3. You should see a red X over the 'Secondary IDE controller' selection in the 'Device Manager'. (This is o.k. - this is how the undocked mode is configured in Win 95)
  4. Hot-dock the unit or shut down the system and cold dock the unit. (Its probably safer to cold dock the unit - NEVER Warm Dock the unit; this feature is not supported in Win95 or Windows 98!!)
  5. Now when you use 'Eject PC' or the Dock/Un-dock button to Hot-undock the unit, you can hot-dock the unit and see the CD-ROM drive fine.

Issue: After upgrading to Windows 98, some of my audio functions no longer work.
Reason: Windows 98 installation automatically chooses the ESS WDM driver as the default sound driver thereby replacing others.
Solution: Download the appropriate sound driver. After downloading the driver, follow the instructions below to install the driver.

How to details:

  1. Right click on My Computer
  2. Choose Properties
  3. Click on the Device Manager Tab
  4. Click on Sound, Video and Game controllers
  5. Double click on ES1879 Plug and Play AudioDrive (WDM)
  6. Click on the Driver tab
  7. Double click on Upgrade Driver
  8. Click on Next
  9. Click on Select driver from a specific location
  10. Choose Have Disk
  11. Insert Recovery CD
  12. Select D:\Drivers\Sound or D:\Drivers\Audio
  13. Click OK

Issue: Am I operating in ACPI power management mode?
Reason: No, Windows 98 will automatically set your system to APM power management mode. Do not select ACPI mode at this time. It will not work and to switch back to APM mode will require a new installation of Windows 98. ACPI is a new technology in Windows 98. Your system will be fully functional in APM power management mode.
Solution: Fujitsu is working to provide you with the correct drivers to take advantage of this capability. The appropriate drivers will be posted on the web site when they become available. After you upgrade the drivers, you will be able to switch to ACPI mode, if you choose.

My CD-ROM is not working when my 600 Series notebook is docked in the enhancement unit. Why not?
Check if you are powering the system with a single battery or plugging in the AC adapter plug into the back of the LifeBook 635T notebook. If you are using the battery, then please power down the unit and plug your AC adapter to the back of the LifeBook 635T enhancement unit when the LifeBook 635T notebook is docked. If the AC adapter is not available, the LifeBook 635T and CD-ROM will only function if the primary and secondary batteries are working together to supply power to both the LifeBook and the enhancement unit.

How can I display the LifeBook's video output to an external monitor (CRT), or to both the internal screen and an external monitor?
Once your monitor's cable is connected to your Fujitsu PC notebook's external VGA SVGA port (at the rear of the system) and you have booted (started) Windows 95, hold down the FN key on your keyboard (located in the lower left corner of your keyboard) and press function key F10 key on your keyboard while keeping the FN key pressed down. Keep the FN key pressed down and press the F10 key again. Try "toggling" the video output destinations by pressing these two keys simultaneously. Pressing these keys will toggle the video output destination between the LCD mode, the CRT mode and the Simultaneous display mode (if the external monitor is compatible with the installed video driver). To leave your video output to a setting other than to the Fujitsu PC LifeBook's LCD, check your Fujitsu PC owners manual.

Additional Fujitsu PC notebook external monitor or display information.

Simultaneous internal/external display is only supported in the LCD panel's default resolution. The external display device (monitor, LCD projector/panel) must be capable of displaying the same resolution as your LCD display panel's default resolution. To use the Fujitsu PC LifeBook's Simultaneous internal/external display mode with models that come with high-resolution (800x600) screens, your external display device (monitor or LCD projector/panel) must support at least an 800x600 resolution.

Additional TouchPad information for the LifeBook 600 Series.

The LifeBook 600 Series TouchPad is a sensor-type TouchPad. Its movement is based on the transmission of pressure transferred by the user's finger. Please be aware that this type of TouchPad is used in the LifeBook 600 Series, especially if you have used other types of TouchPads before. The reaction that it has with Windows 95 Desktop (i.e. highlighting of Windows 95 objects or icons when in the desktop or a window) is different than other types of TouchPads. The recommended way to use this type of TouchPad is to use the finger tip or finger nail instead of pressing a "flat finger" onto the TouchPad surface. Utilizing this method of "minimal contact" will improve sensitivity and provide more control.

Why doesn't my notebook read any 3 1/2" floppy disks? When I check "My Computer" on the Windows 95 desktop, it shows that a 5 1/4" Floppy Disk Drive is installed instead of the 3 1/2" Disk Drive.
There can be many variables to the problem you are experiencing. The most common are answered below.

  1. On Fujitsu PC notebooks that incorporate modular components (i.e. the Floppy Disk Drive), check it to verify that it is properly seated in it's modular bay. Remove it and re-install it to be sure.
  2. Check your BIOS Settings to verify that Diskette access is not set to Supervisor only. If it is set to Supervisor only, change this setting to All.
  3. Under the Main Menu, check to verify that diskette A: is set to 1.44 MB, 3.5 inch.

Follow these steps to verify your BIOS Settings:

  1. Power on your notebook.
  2. Press the F2 key when prompted to Enter Setup.
  3. In the BIOS Settings screen, verify the Main Menu (first screen) that the Diskette A: says that it's 1.44 MB, 3.5 inch. If this is set to anything else, press the arrow key to choose Diskette A: and press the space bar to until it says 1.44 MB, 3.5 inch to make the change.
  4. Press the arrow key to the right to go to the Security Menu.
  5. Check that Diskette access is set to: All. If this is set to Supervisor only, press the arrow key down to go to Diskette access.
  6. Press the space bar to toggle through and make changes.
  7. After confirming these settings. Press the ESC key.
  8. Press the ESC key again to Save Changes and Exit.
  9. Highlight and press Enter when you are asked if you want to Save Changes and Exit.
  10. Press Enter again to continue and restart the system.

4. Check for a virus. Commonly, the cause of incorrect disk drive information is due to a virus. Some Fujitsu PC notebooks are shipped with McAfee VirusScan. Please use this software to verify a virus has not infected your notebook. If your machine does not have McAfee VirusScan software, please purchase a Windows 95 compatible virus software package to check it.

AH530, PH520, SH530: Do not use Catalyst Control Center to change the display brightness
Products Involved

  • Microsoft Windows 7
  • Fujitsu LifeBook AH530 Notebook PC
  • Fujitsu LifeBook PH520 Notebook PC
  • Fujitsu LifeBook SH530 Notebook PC

Symptom

  • Cannot see anything on display
  • Screen is all black
  • Screen is all white
  • Used Catalyst Control Center to change brightness
Solution

DO NOT USE CATALYST CONTROL CENTER TO CHANGE THE DISPLAY BRIGHTNESS

Use FN+F6 and FN+F7 to change the display brightness.

Even though the Catalyst Control Center has a menu to change the display brightness, it should not be used.

The display may become all white or all black if the brightness is changed to the minimum or maximum value through the AMD utility "Catalyst Control Center". At that point the graphics driver is corrupted and must be reinstalled.

PERFORM THE FOLLOWING TO FIX:

  1. Uninstall the graphics driver in Safe Mode
  2. Reinstall the graphics driver

Uninstall the graphics driver in Safe Mode:

    1. Restart the computer, press [F8] aftmultiple times after the Fujitsu logo shows but before the Windows logo shows
    2. A list of options will show, choose "Safe Mode"
    3. Once in Safe Mode, open Control Panel then Device Manager
    4. Open Display adapters, right-click ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and choose Uninstall
    5. Check Delete the driver software for this device
    6. Complete the process by clicking OK and closing all windows, then restart the computer

Reinstall the graphics driver:

    1. Either download the driver from www.us.fujitsu.com or use the Drivers And Applications Disc

20100729: Fujitsu Engineering has stated an updated driver will be released to fix this in Fall 2010.

Effects of Loud Music on Shock Sensor Utility Functionality
Products Involved

  • Fujitsu Shock Sensor Utility
  • Fujitsu LifeBook A3110 Notebook PC
  • Fujitsu LifeBook A6010 Notebook PC

Solution

The Fujitsu Shock Sensor utility is designed to help protect your hard disk drive in the event of excessive vibration or shock to the system. In the event your drive is subjected to excessive vibration or shock, there is a possibility that the read-write head could come into contact with the rotating platter, resulting in a "head crash." If that should happen, data loss may occur. The Fujitsu Shock Sensor feature is designed to minimize the likelihood of such an event.

When playing certain types of music at high volume, particularly with internal speakers, you may notice one or both of the following:

  • You may receive multiple hard disk drive "park" notification messages due to excessive system vibration.
  • You may notice that your music occasionally skips or stutters.

These effects are a result of excessive system vibration during music playback at high volume resulting in parking of the hard disk drive. If the audio quality of your system is impacted by either of these effects, you should change the following settings during music playback:

  1. Open the Shock Sensor options in the Shock Sensor Utility Settings by going to [Start] \All Programs \ Shock Sensor Utility \ Configuration.
  2. Set "Ignore periodic vibrations", "Ignore mouse click", and "Ignore keyboard action" if these settings are not already applied.

If the above step does not help, then reduce the Shock Sensor sensitivities (Sensitivity of impact, Sensitivity of horizontal move, and Sensitivity of fall).

My computer is shutting down sixty seconds after I connect to the internet with a "RPC DCOM" message. Do I have a virus?

It is possible your computer has been infected by what is called the "W32.Blaster.Worm". This is a virus-like program which began high circulation on Monday August 11, 2003. The worm can cause your computer to shutdown after connecting to the internet and other intermittent problems.

To clean the computer or to stop from being infected, Fujitsu recommends you take the following actions:

  1. Update Windows with one of the following methods: (both options install the same files)
    1. Use Windows Update; install all Critical Updates and Service Packs.
    2. Download and install the Security Update issued by Microsoft in Security Bulletin MS03-026 and Knowledgebase Article 823980.
  2. Confirm the Hotfix is installed by opening Add or Remove Programs from the Control Panel. Verify "Windows XP Hotfix - KB823980" is in the list of currently installed programs.
  3. Clean the computer with the Symantec W32.Blaster.Worm Removal Tool.

These instructions are correct to the best knowledge of Fujitsu PC at the time of publication. The links to websites outside of Fujitsu's control are subject to change. Using Windows Update and Anti-Virus software is the recommended way to prevent malicious software attacks.
